Traffic & Pedestrian Safety

Concept-level ideas for reducing cut-through traffic, shortening pedestrian crossings, and making Maple Springs streets work more like neighborhood streets.

The problem

The streets around Maple Springs are built to carry volume. The streets inside the neighborhood are not. Cut-through traffic currently uses interior residential blocks to skip signals, producing higher speeds, long unprotected crossings, and unclear geometry. Existing controls such as stop signs, paint, and speed humps depend heavily on driver compliance. The concepts below explore geometry that would work continuously, without closing streets or removing resident access.

Each location has a different condition and a different proposed treatment. The illustrations are conceptual and would require City review before anything could move forward.

Maple Springs Blvd at Crestview

Raised median refuge and curb extensions

At the northeast entry from Cedar Springs, a raised median refuge and tighter curb geometry would split the crossing into two stages, while preserving access for residents, deliveries, and emergency vehicles.

Maple Springs Blvd at Denton

Compact traffic circle

This interior crossroads is currently wide and skewed, with stop control as the primary speed-management tool. A compact traffic circle would establish right-of-way through geometry and help hold vehicle speeds continuously.

Amelia at Maple Springs Blvd

Curb extensions, refuge islands, ADA ramps

At the commercial edge and one of the neighborhood’s most important walking crossings, curb extensions would shorten pedestrian crossings and tighten turning radii. Ramps would be refined through City review and applicable ADA, PROWAG, and TxDOT standards.

Denton and Clara at Fairmount

Neighborhood-scale roundabout

At the south entry, three streets converge across broad pavement with no clear yielding order. A neighborhood-scale roundabout would resolve right-of-way and moderate approach speeds.

Why geometry instead of more speed humps?

Speed humps reduce speed at the hump but do less between humps, and they can add noise, pavement wear, and emergency-response delay. Signs and paint work only on drivers who comply. Traffic circles, curb extensions, and median refuges are standard treatments used to shape driver behavior through the street itself.

Where this stands

These concepts have been shared with several City departments and are being put forward for consideration in a future City bond program. Nothing here is funded, approved, or scheduled. City traffic engineering would refine any design well before construction. Neighborhood feedback now can help shape what is requested and whether the work stays visible in future planning.
